Former Historic Post Office

Adaptive Reuse Study

Adaptive Reuse

2022-2023

After decades sitting vacant and under out-of-state ownership, Shamokin’s Economic Development Authority acquired the former Historic Post Office building located at 400 E Sunbury Street. The 1912 limestone veneer building consists of two floors and has experienced damage due to water infiltration. Landmarks visited the site to collect field measurements, take photographs, and note conditions in an effort to support a future reuse of the building. We worked with the EDA to generate conceptual plans for a future restaurant/distillery/speakeasy establishment. Besides the water infiltration, a main challenge of the site is the sloping topography, which limits accessibility to the building. The conceptual plans identified accessibility improvements, accurate plumbing counts, and code compliant exits determined by the proposed occupancy. Landmarks is currently developing a conditions assessment report to make recommendations for the first stage of construction: building stabilization, which will be aimed at preventing water infiltration and repairing the building envelope.
